KyleTomek.com: Tripletail fishing is quickly becoming very popular in deeper bay systems in Texas. Growing up near West Matagorda Bay, tripletailing has been a tactic achieved only by the locals. Being a deep and expansive bay system, West Matagorda Bay is a magnet for tripletail during the summer months. Buoys, pilings, platforms, and/or any floating structure that provides shade is a prime spot to fish for tripletail. West Matagorda is rich with this structure which makes the waters a prime ‘tailin spot. The reason why the offshore fish moves into the bay is questionable. Some say the sows move into the bay systems to spawn while other myths arise daily. Whatever the reason, deeper bay systems with flowing passes attract some big tripletail during the summertime. Matched with the local interest, tripletail catches are higher in the bay system than any other on the Texas coast. Gill net catches are also signifantly higher than any other bay. Tripletailing is catching on in Aransas and Galveston Bays as well. New tactics are spreading across the coast, however, the basic setup of a deep rigged shrimp beneath a cork proves to be the best producer. Put the cork as close to the structure as possible and hold on. If a hungry tripletail lies below, chances are the cork will submerge.
